Ascent of Mount Bogong on 2021-03-20Date: | Saturday, March 20, 2021 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Mount Bogong | Location: | Australia-Victoria | Elevation: | 6516 ft / 1986 m |
Ascent Trip ReportBeautiful hike starting with fairly flat walk along Mountain Creek, reaching the base of Staircase Spur after 30 minutes (2.7km of walking). From here, we climbed the steep Staircase Spur through the mountain forest, with progress slowing and Bivouac Hut being reached 1 hour and 45 minutes later (3.5km from base of Spur to Hut). The most scenic part of the walk was the final push to the summit, with the 3km from Bivouac Hut to the summit taking another 1 hour and 45 minutes. The final few hundred metres of elevation are above the tree line with incredible views, only interrupted by low clouds passing over. There was a large temperature difference between the base and summit, dropping from 25 degrees Celsius to something more like 8 degrees Celsius. Staircase Spur is consistently steep the whole way up but the path is easy to follow, with notable changes in vegetation from Mountain Creek to the summit. The way down was not difficult but seemed to take forever, a reminder of the scale of the climb. |
