Ascent of Paris Mountain on 2022-01-08Date: | Saturday, January 8, 2022 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Paris Mountain | Location: | USA-South Carolina | Elevation: | 2067 ft / 630 m |
Ascent Trip ReportI drove to the summit on a clear January morning. The negative signage for the summit road is still present, but sometime between Andy Martin's visit and my own, the electronic gate has been busted and moved out of the way, and you're able to just drive right up. I parked at the pullout at the end of the road (good views to downtown Greenville) and walked the outside of the fence to highest ground I could reach, maybe a foot lower than some areas inside the fence, and called it good. Unfortunately, the gate and fence for the summit complex are pretty secure, not to mention there are several "enclosures" in the complex so you probably couldn't get to high ground even if you found a weakness elsewhere.
The views as you drive up and down the mountain are spectacular by South Carolina standards, with views of Sassafras and Hogback as well as out to the endless lowlands. The houses perched on Paris Mountain's slopes are probably among the most upscale in the state. Strangely, despite the very residential character of this mountain, there were a few brown point of interest signs at the base of the mountain. |
