Ascent Trip ReportThe original plan was to hike 25 miles on Skyline Ridge in the Pecos Wilderness, camping 2 nights on the ridge, but because of fire restrictions the area was closed. Instead, my son Garret and I decided to hike some peaks near Latir Lakes in the Latir Wilderness in northern New Mexico. The 9 beautiful high alpine Latir Lakes are privately owned by the Rio Costilla Livestock Association (RCLA) and for a fee one may camp on their land. The Latir Wilderness borders RCLA and is on National Forest land. We left 5:30 in the morning on Friday June 26, 2011. We headed to northern New Mexico past Taos to the town of Costilla then headed east until we reached RCLA land. To make it all the way to the lakes requires a 4 wheel drive vehicle. A couple of miles before our camp we saw a bear and as it ran it almost looked like a cartoon animal. There are nine lakes and we stayed at the lake at the end of the road, 6 more lakes were up ahead. We stayed in the exact spot I camped 6 summers ago with my wife and 4 daughters. (The eastern part of the lake where the exit stream and lake meet.) We set up camp, hiked to a large beautiful waterfall on the way to the next lake. Garret fished, only catching small ones and throwing them back. Because of fire restrictions we could not have a campfire so I cooked Cornish game hens, wild rice and mushrooms in a chicken broth over a gas stove in a crock-pot. That evening, not able to have a campfire, we enjoyed looking a citronella candle and later used Garret’s spotting scope to look at some stairs.
The next morning we got up at 8:00, had some coffee and started our hike at 9:15. The elevation of our camp was about 11,150 feet. We crossed the little stream next to our camp and were planning to “burn it” up the hill. To our delight we found an old trail, and even though it was greatly worn it was much better than fighting it up the hill. We made the ridge and headed towards peak 12,165. We arrived there at 10:30 after traveling 1.2 miles. We went back down to the ridge then up to Baldy Cabin Peak, elevation 12,116, arriving there at 11:30 after traveling 2.6 miles. We hiked to the south until we arrive at Baldy Mountain, elevation 12,046, at 12:20 after traveling 3.7 miles. The views were spectacular the entire hike. We hiked back to the ridge and followed the old trail back to camp. We arrived at camp at 2:00 PM, after hiking 4 hours and 45 minutes, hiking a total of 5 and ¾ miles. We took a nap, Garret fished, only catching one that he threw back, and had a wonderful beef fajita dinner. Not able to have a campfire we watched the citronella candle then went to bed. Most of our trip was very windy. The next morning we got up at 6:15, had coffee, packed up and left at 7:45 to return back to the Albuquerque area. Driving back we saw another bear, which I was able to get a great picture of, then we arrived back a little after 12:00.
