Ascent Trip Report

Using the local guide by Christopher Keene, Karen and I set out to explore the Little Moose Mountain range. A few things to note. First the book inplied to us to use the trail out of the upper right part of the parking lot but that is a snowmobile trail that takes you the wrong way. Go to the Greenwood Motel and park in the far left parking area and you will see the state lands sign and trailhead.

The trail is in places outstanding shape and in other places a mess from winter storms (many trees down in the way of the path). Where it is maintained it is an easy class 1. It becomes steep with roots and slippery rocks (especially after a rain)and required some hand holds on a wet day. So i rated those steeper sections thru the ledges as class 2 and some 2+ nearly scramble.

The trail meanders and has a lot of rolling terrain so you give back some of your gain along the way and that extra gain is included herein as an estimate. There are many nice overlooks at low elevations of the lake and Greenville Junction below near the beginning of the hike. After 2 miles and at the base of the summit of the east peak is an interesting tower of nearly scrambleable rock that is about 100 feet or so high that the trail scoots around. It is probably lower class 5 for most it but it is interesting section of trail. At the saddle the trails to the summit were closed by deliberate branches. We did not know where we were so we continued hiking wondering where the summits were. We started losing elevation when we came up upon an interesting feature - at first it looked like a stone building but then we realized it was an unusual slab of rock that had been ice heaved into several large chunks that made deep fissures. The fissures looked like a great place for a bear to hang out and the trail wraps down and below the overhang of the slabs.

Still not sure where we were - we continued far down trail until we found the beautiufl marsh pond filled with Beaver dams called Papoose Pond. Now knowing where we were, we reversed our trip and headed back up hill regaining much elevation and when I found the turn off to the summit of the east peak I left Karen and began my bushwack to the top. The steep ledges seen ealier are not near the actual summit. The entire trip, including path finding around fallen trees, stopping to check the Keene book to see where we were and some photos and food was about 4 hours and 15 minutes. I estimate that the mileage was about 3.6 miles each way or 7.2 miles.

Additional Gain = 110 feet (rolling terrain)to upper saddle(shoulder by peak)
Add gain reclimbing overshoot from Papoose Lake back to shoulder = 410
Additional Gain on bushwhack to true peak of East Peak = 73
Total Add Gain to get peak = 593
Starting EL = 1110
Upper Saddle near Peak = 2040
Papoose Lake = 1630
Upper Saddle = 2040
East Peak = 2113
Parking Lot/Road =1110
