Ascent Trip Report

Kelly and I hiked the New Path from Dundee Road. We parked on the road at the New Path trailhead, and did a loop hike up the South Doublehead summit, across the col to the north summit, down the Doublehead ski trail to the parking lot on Dundee Road, and then hiked 0.25 miles along Dundee Road back to the car. The entire hike took us about two hours, including time resting at both summits. The weather couldn't have been much better: Upper 60s with barely a cloud in the sky.

The approach from South Doublehead was not too difficult, with just one short steep push to the North Doublehead summit. At one point, you reach a trail junction with the Old Path. If you're going for the North summit, just keep going straight and don't take the Old Path.

The trail leads right up to the cabin at the North Doublehead summit. We took a trail behind the cabin to a ledge that offered nice views toward the east. We lounged at this ledge for at least fifteen minutes before continuing on. Although the view was nice (and this peak is on the 52 With A View list), we saw FAR more impressive views from the ledges near the South Doublehead summit.

While at the summit, we saw a group of 12 early-twenty-something guys and two gals heading out for the hike back down the mountain, after spending the night at the cabin. One of them must have drawn the short straw, and had to hike down carrying a garbage bag stuffed full of empty beer cans. It looked like Busch Light ... yukk.

Kelly and I descended along the Doublehead ski trail back to Dundee Road. This trail was gentle, pleasant downhill hiking. For a S. and N. Doublehead loop, I would recommend ascending South Doublehead along the very steep New Path, and descending North Doublehead along the gently sloping ski trail. I think a descent from South Doublehead on the New Path would be a bit scary.
