Ascent Trip ReportDriving around the gloriously wild North-Eastern coast of Sao Miguel on a clear and sunny day, I couldn't resist the temptation to climb Vara. Drove up the long cul de sac from Achada, parking on the cinder track section a kilometre or so below the ridge line. There a waymarked path to Vara awaits, and promptly leads you through a high level bog surprisingly reminiscent of the Southern Uplands. the ridge becomes more sharply defined after a saddle and path junction. The path wends through a miniature forest of dwarf conifers, past a memorial to an Air France plane that crashed in 1949, and over an intervening top before zigzagging towards the summit of Vara, crowned with a typically Cubist Portuguese summit cross. A delightful walk with views from coast to coast across the island, and over the forested ridges leading from Vara to lower summits to the North. |
