Ascent Trip ReportWanting to do one more training hike before our trip with Guides to do Mount Hood, we stopped along the Columbia River at the Lausmann State Park and eyed a very impressive group of narrow knife edges running perpendicular to the river. David and I did not know that there was a trail up the peaks so we thought we might do a bit of bushwhacking. We found a narrow but steep ravine-scree slope and David attemtped it for about 60 feet vertical - slipping and sliding. We abandoned this idea when it appeard to be too dangerous and not enough traction. Climbing back to the slide, I had to mount over a difficult lip in the ravine and try to keep from sliding fast down the loose scree. Upon pivet my hips and legs smacked down on the sharp loose material and began to slide.
When we both got down i noticed i had carved up my left hip with a lot of abrasion (sice of a basketball) thru my long pants and another bad bruise and abrasions on my calf.
Annoyed at our poor path selection and our abandoning this very unsafe and steep class 2 slide, we worked down and found the trail provided and completed the hike. The trail was well maintained and steep class 1 to class 2 but very easy to do.
The views at the top of this feature were amazing. Defiance had snow at the top. The cliff edges of the knife edge were near vertical on the west side. With the wind blowing we did not dare stand near the edge of this very narrow and knife edge feature. Very impressive views - nice quick hike.
