Ascent Trip Report

Second ascent of Beacon Rock that day. The first was to check out the views and rock climbing routes and the second (this one) was to simply get cell reception to call home and train my legs for our upcoming Mount Hood trip.

The first time up David and I walked a reasonably good pace and took a few photos and did the up in 16 minutes and down in around 15 (checking out some rock climbing trails). The most impressive part of this peak is the columnar basalt sides. Truly a beautiful chunk of geology - a volcanic projection recently carved by glaciers eating away at it down the Columbia River.

Walked all the way up the mountain (620 feet and 0.9 miles) in only 15 minutes - a good training pace considering i was talking on the phone at same time. Returned in 9 mintues so the total second hike was done in only 24 minutes. David and I arrived late in the day set up our tent in the campground. I got three hikes in back to back - Beacon Rock twice and Little Beacon Rock once, thus training with 4.4 miles and about 1,400 feet.

This is a nice hike for the casual tourist as the class 1 paved slope is easy to climb but the views are impressive all the way up. The rock climbing routes look fun.
