Ascent Trip Report

The Gavilan Trail trail head is well marked on the Taos Ski Valley Road. The trail moves steeply up a narrow canyon--about 2300 feet elevation gain in 2.5 miles. It ends at a four way intersection on the ridge line. Straight ahead goes down Columbine Canyon; right heads toward Gold Hill; left head to Lobo Peak.

After a quick lunch, I went left. It's a very steep leg up to the peak in the best of circumstances (nearly 700 feet elevation gain in just over a half mile), but about a hundred yards up I started to run into deep snow drifts covering the trail. At first I could go around many of them, but it got worse (predictably) the higher I climbed. The few hundred unpleasant feet up to the peak thus took me nearly an hour. But the magnificent views from the top made it worth the effort--panoramic views of the Sangre de Cristos all the way to the Pecos Wilderness to the South and Colorado to the North.
