Ascent Trip ReportAn all road northbound hike with a short whack ..... 9.2km, 370' gain, 2:20 hours RT for both peaks.
This COHP hike took me over another peak. I approached from the south side - the TH north of the huge quarry "WEEKS, Mt Thom Quarry". I also provide an alternate TH for this hike
Driving Directions to the TH.
From the TC104, exit 18A, we drove east on Hwy#4, passed Glen Road on the left at 5.2km (road for the alternate TH), and in another 2.2km arrived at the quarry entrance on the left signed "WEEKS, Mt Thom Quarry".
We drove north on the winding/paved quarry road 1.2km to the manned entry station. I asked the attendant, "Are we able to access the Windmill Farm from here.".
"Ya, just drive straight through the quarry.", was the friendly reply.
We continued for another 1.1km to to "surprisingly" find a locked gate with a man-way to one side. This was my TH (45.54296,-62.97861) elev 295m ). Straight ahead is a windmill with Mount Ephraim just beyond.
Alternate TH in case there is a problem at the quarry - On the left of my TH is Bezanson Lake road which comes up from the west and is also gated the this elevation. I later checked this out - from Hwy#4 take Glen Road north 2km to the signed Bezanson Lake Road on the right, then 2.1km east to its locked gate (this is a poor road). There is a large sign at the start of this road saying "a permit is required to access the windmill farm". ??????
All hiking distances and elevations that I provide are approx.
From my TH I walked the excellent Windmill Farm Road 300m north to MOUNT EPHRAIM - just left of the road amid some dense brush.
I continued north on the road 1.4km to a left bend, I stayed straight (still north) on the lesser road, signed Tower Road, trail#552, and in another 0.7km stayed right at a fork (eastbound) (45.56171,-62.98152, elev 280m). Then 1km east stayed left at the fork as the road climbs 1km northeast to a large clearing (45.56654,-62.96303, elev 340m).
Above the trees to the north I could see a Windmill at 400m, the HP is on a line (mid-way) between this clearing and the Windmill - dense bush, with patches of extremely dense small pine woods - I rate the short bushwhack as difficult - no fun.
Part way in my whack I picked up an orange tape line which took me to the very flat DALHOUSIE MOUNTAIN HP AREA (per the PB coordinates) - I stomped the area the best I could and called it good - with the dense bush and the very flat contour it's impossible to locate "the" HP.
I added my pink tapes to the already "orange taped HP".
I backtracked to my TH, going over MOUNT EPHRIAM for the second time.
"ALTHOUGH I HAVE TRAVELLED ALL THE ROADS, CROSSED MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS FROM EAST TO WEST, IF I HAVE NOT DISCOVERED THE FREEDOM TO BE MYSELF, I HAVE ARRIVED NOWHERE." ............. el camino's pilgrim's prayer
