Ascent Trip Report

I summited Elkhorn the day before and my plan was to traverse West for this summit.

In following my motto: “Get High and Stay High” I came down the west ridge from Elkhorn trying to keep as high on the ridge as possible. I ended up bivouacked on the north side of the ridge from the night before coming off the summit of Elkhorn. I made my way off the ridge and contoured my way to Long Lake South summit. The summit is characterized by a big open area on top and visually I could not ascertain a definitive high point so I hit them all. Of the three possible high points I found with my GPS that the SW was the highest by 3 feet:

3 possible high points

SW rock: 8822’

North :  8819’

SE rock:  8813’

As I said, I hit all three points to cover my bases.

Water: Coming off the summit moving east toward Glacier Mountain, I noticed what appeared to be water in the valley to the North, so I diverted into the valley losing a couple hundred feet and found a seep that turned into a flow and was able to replenish my water.

I attained the ridge again and began my traverse toward Glacier Mountain.
