Ascent Trip Report

Public. We timed this to hit the gate at the start of my track which is open until 9/30 annually. Refer to the MVUM for dates on this road which I believe is FS "4103087 Rancheria". Beyond here the road was better than expected as the road bed is fairly good, some dips and berms and it is narrow twisty and a little bit steep but I considered this a high clearance road that doesn't require 4WD at present. We parked at Chetco Pass where the USFS has created wooden fences to stop ATVs from using the old mining road.

The route is straight-forward as you simply walk the old mining road to the top. The road is fine for walking and much would be drivable in a 4WD vehicle if allowed; though some spots are more of an ATV track. Anyway, the route is mercilessly exposed to the sun and we roasted on this day. The area burned in the Biscuit fire and then again in 2017 and 2018 fires too supposedly. We grunted our way in the heat up to the narrow section traversing W under the summit where the ATV track ends, the wilderness begins and it becomes a trail. After a switchback on the SW ridge, the trail easily gains the summit. A few different rock clusters contend for the highest ground. The old lookout looks weathered but seems to be getting some attention from the Sand Mountain Society. The descent was uneventful as Bobby chased lizards and everyone melted in the sun. But it was satisfying to get the peak.
