Ascent Trip ReportLegs felt the previous day's ascent up Ruby via Panther Creek so I took my time on the ascent w/ a nice snack break at the tarn to assess my ridge ascent options. I have no idea why the SE route is the standard route or why anyone goes up/down it. Being in trail runners, I wasn't about to try to edge into hardpack w/ ball bearings (why? seriously, why?).
As I was ascending the S ridge, three folks were heading down and we chatted quickly and gave each other space since it's a gully full of loose rocks. Two others (not in their party) were descending the SE route in what seemed to take forever. I felt bad for those folks and it just solidified that I would be descending the S route.
The mile-long ridge is just super fun and beautiful. Some speak of a short class 4 section, but I have to disagree. It's class 3 w/ some exposure. The hand and footholds are plentiful and I could easily scramble in my trusty Altras. Yes, you have to be mindful and careful but it's short and worth it.
I hung out on the summit for a good 30+ min taking in the views, snacking, taking pictures, and observing the smoke plume from the Ceder Creek fire. There's a small bivy near the summit that would be an epic spot to camp. The views are incredible.
Another great day in the mountains.
