Ascent Trip Report

After Óros Aínos and Kalon Oros we thought we might as well climb Kefalonia's third most prominent summit too! It turned out to be the best of the day, nice though the other two were.

A good dirt road leads (via a rustic gate) to the base of the mountain at N38.17660 E20.70679, 335m. Above are steep slopes, scrubby below, rocky above. We headed NE, following a goat path through the initial scrub. We soon emerged onto open ground, with nice steep scrambly limestone (YDS 2+, sustained but barely YDS 3) which made for rapid upward progress. The slope relented and we contoured round to cross a rocky re-entrant then followed the GPS pointer to the summit (N38.19144 E20.70366, 1067m): cairn by cylindrical trig pillar. Noting that the NNW summit appeared similar in height, we made the rocky descent to a saddle (N38.19404 E20.70410, 966m) then made our way up through low thorny vegetation (goat tracks) to the summit (N38.19664 E20.70187, 1066m) - small rough concrete base on outcrop.

We returned to the 996m saddle then headed SW down a grassy re-entrant (pasture and terraces). We then contoured L (S) but it would have been better to follow the re-entrant downwards SW. We descended to a farm track at N38.18214 E20.69496, 711m, which we followed down to N38.17437 E20.69709, 621m. here we forked L. In a few minutes the track ran out and we continued down goat tracks to the farm buildings (N38.17672 E20.70595) near to where we had left the car. A very enjoyable 3 hour circuit.

On our way to Poros we located the prominence saddle to investigate the prominence of this near-P600. The saddle appears to be a football ground at N38.17386 E20.68236, 478m. The difference between this and the 1067m summit GPS reading suggests a prominence of 589m although it is impossible to say with any certainty on the basis of hand-held GPS readings taken several hours apart.

We crossed to the W coast at Argostoli then followed the coast round (the SE coast has some quite impressive scenery), before catching the Poros-Kyllini ferry across to the Pelloponese mainland, ready to bag our next Ultra, Killini in the morning.
