Ascent Trip Report2 of my daughters and I while on a camping trip to the Shawnee NF decided to make the quick ascent up Williams hill, which is the highest point in the forest. A road goes all the way to the top. There is a sign there noting that it's the 2nd highest point in IL but I have my doubts about that claim. There are a lot of hills in Northern IL near the state HP, Charles Mound. I have a hard time believing that no other hill up there surpasses 1064 feet but maybe I'm wrong.
We approached Williams Hill from the West coming from the Garden of the Gods campground. From the intersection of CR 4 & 10 just south of Garden of the Gods go west on CR 4. At the intersection with Hwy 34 turn right (East). There's a little gas station with small restaurant inside. They cooked up a GREAT tasting burger. Yummmm. Go east on Hwy 34 and proceed through the tiny "town" of Herod. Just past Herod turn left on Herod road (I believe there's a sign there marking the way). Take the first right, which is Williams Tower Road. Again, there's a sign, this route is very well marked. Before long you'll turn right onto an unmarked road and proceed the rest of the way up to the tower.
According to my altimeter we gained about 600 feet between Herod and the high point which is only about 3 miles. There's considerable elevation gain, but sadly no spectacular view from the top. Still, you can get the obligatory shot next to the Williams Hill sign that's up at the top next to some ugly electrical towers. Sure glad they've preserved the access for HPers though.
