Ascent Trip ReportLong. Day. Started from Willow Creek Trailhead at 03:35. Reached Challenger summit at 08:45 (5 hrs, 10 min up). Took KC Avenue to reach KC summit by 09:45. Stopped 20 min for lunch/pics, then left summit at 10:15. Some fun class 3 stuff with solid holds! Traversed back over Challenger to make it there by 11:20, then made the crappy descent off of the peak. And how crappy it was…loose, steep and miserable. But an overall gorgeous and memorable hike. And some of the best views I’ve seen in the Rockies! Plus came across multiple families of Bighorn! Back to the car by 15:35…12 hours in total on the nose. 14.5 miles round trip, 6250’ total gain. The experience, killer views, multiple waterfalls, Willow Lake, wildlife, fun scrambling and the Avenue all combine for KC to earn my “Favorite 14er of the Year” Award for 2021.
