Ascent Trip ReportOnce on top of Nebo (I started at 6:45 am, and summited at 9:30 am), I felt like I still had a lot of day ahead of me, so I decided to try a descent down into North Basin, where I could meet up with the Nebo Bench trail, and take that back to the trailhead.
My descent into North Basin was far more tedious than I had hoped would be the case. I started out staying just to the south of the ridge that drops to the southeast from the summit, and then eventually dropped into the upper basin. From the summit to about 11200 feet, the route was on lose scree, and involved navigation around small cliff bands. The steepness and lose nature of the upper slopes of North Basin make for very unpleasant scrambling / sliding!
At about 11200' I regained the southeast ridge, just to look over the other side. There I saw 2 goats on the ridge about 1/4 mile (or less) to the north.
Once I got to 11200 or 11000', the going became easier, down and ascross slightly less steep slopes with mountain vegetation (lupine, and lower, chokecherry) growing in the basin. In my descent I gradually crossed to the south side of the basin, going around the north side of the 10280'+ knob. After that I descended pretty steep, vegetated slopes to the Nebo Bench trail.
A small bit of snow was still hanging out where the Bench trail crosses through North Basin, at 9520'. I filled my empty bottle from the dripping end of the snopatch, in a hollow, cave like opening.
Once on the trail, I had the long, slow miles to the trailhead before me. I reached the trailhead in mid-afternoon, having spent a considerable amount of time descending into North Basin.
