Ascent Trip ReportAfter hiking Laramie this morning, I left there and went straight to the intersection of bear creek and FS-671A and began my attempt on this one at 10:50am. It was hot and sweaty and I was definitely very slow and somewhat unmotivated. It was fine at first but after traversing south of that small mound the bushwhacking and deadfall was incredibly obtrusive and just a giant pain. I was always climbing over something whether it was rocks or trees. Very slow going. Since it was very short mileage and gain I kept going. Finally I made it to the beginning of the base of the rock saddle leading to the 9167 benchmark, ended up traversing that wall to the north and hugging it until I made it on top of the ridge proper. Still needed to get on the rock outcropping, and wasted tons of time trying to make the first spot I found to work but it required a dicey&slopey ledge traverse. Bailed down and found an easy class 3 route up the west side alongside a giant crack in the formation. You could actually see through the entire crack to the other side.
Quickly found the 2 benchmarks and moseyed over to the north end of these cliffs, where it seemed to be slightly taller. Looking to the north, it did kind of seem like that rock ridge was slightly taller (3 vertical boulders/prongs). Based on the note I see on this page, whoever created the page seems to be very sure that the north ridge is taller. I think thats pretty debatable. IF it is its probably only 5 feet higher max. Would need to get an updated survey. I wasn't about to scramble over there since this isn't that important of a peak, and called it good since I bagged the BM. Looked to be class 3/4 to get on top of that one but couldn't see the backside. Good views of Laramie from here and a few of the other rugged peaks out here. Probably was my favorite view of the 5 peaks I did this weekend.
Getting down was much better as I was able to get over the deadfall easier. Still was a slog but thankfully a somewhat fast one. If I had to do 2000 feet+ of this I would have probably just given up. Made it back to the car at 1:35 to begin the LONG route out of here towards Rock River. Really didn't think I'd ever see pavement again.
