Ascent Trip ReportAfter settling in our huts overlooking the Pacific Ocean from 16 miles out in the Gulfo de Chiriqui in Panama, my son and I joined out island host who guided us all around the north half of the private island where we were staying. The impressive tide pools were not at the right time of day to explore the south half of the island so we stayed on the northe half exploring the freshwater lagoons with crocodiles, the 20 to 30 meter cliffs ( 60 to 90 feet above the sea)of volcanic coastline and interior tropical woods with him.
We debated which one of the volcanic hills was the island highpoint and Grant said they had not been able to verify by GPS whether it was the north side or south. We descided to hit both for fun since there was so much impressive coastal cliff to view. The following day he took us to the other side of the island. For a small island (65 acres) there was so much rolling terrain that the day hiking was satisfying in terms of excercise and 80 to 110 foot views above the ocean was plenty of vertical for impressive photographs - especially with the 14-15 foot tidal variation and the surf pounding 15 to 25 foot wave run up in places. The tidal pools, snorkeling and fishing exceeded my expectations.
We came back to our huts and his girl friend from Nicaragua "Marbel" had cooked us a wonderful fresh fish meal!
The trip was booked through the Habla Ya Spanish Teaching School in Boquette. Felix Madias was our driver that took us to the site and showed us how to pick and manage fresh cashews.
