Ascent Trip ReportI set up 4 consecutive days' day hike plans in Maine between 9/9-12 2010. Ed.P joined my hiking events.
Day-1 is to hike to Begelow Range in order to cover 3 peaks: The Horns, West Peak and Avery Peak.
Day-2 is to hike to Saddleback / Saddleback-the Horns in Rangeley
Day-3 is to hike to Mt Kathadin to peakbag Hamlin, Baxter and Pamola Peaks.
Day-4 is to hike to N/S Brothers, Coe and Fort.
9/11(Sat) as Day-3 hike was Mt Kathadin. This is very special mountain which I don't see in any other mountains in North East in the U.S. It's so beautiful mountains, but streneous hike especially for Knife's Edge between Baxter Peak and Pamola Peak over South Peak.
I started hike at 6:20 from Roaring Brook campground and took Chimney Pond Trail. It's 2.3 miles to get to the first junction and we arrived there at 7:20AM. It's 2.3 mph pace which was good. Then, we took North Basin cutoff trail which was a bit rugged. It's 0.7 miles short trail and we spent only 0.5 hour. Next is North Basin Trail for 0.3 mi, took only 10 min which was 8AM.
Then, we started steep ascent with Hamlin Ridge Trail for 1.3 miles. I felt this is very long distance and when I got up to certain point, I started to see higher peak further. Then, we hiked up more, then, again, I started to see higher peak at further point. I felt this was kind of endless hiking trail to grab Hamlin peak. But finally, we reached there at 9:30AM and we were the first 2 people who grabbed the peak on the day. We passed over so many hikers on the way to get here. We spent about 30min at the top. Then, we resumed hike at 10AM and we reached to Baxter Peak at 11:14AM. We ate lunch again and Ed hiked out without going through Knife's Edge. I re-started to hike at knife's edge at 11:55AM. I got South Peak (5240 ft) at 12:14PM and Pamola Peak(4919 ft) at 1:25PM. It was a long day hike and I got back to the parking lot at Roaring Brook at 3:50PM.
This was 10.5 miles hike and it took 9 hours 35 mins. It was 1.1 mph pace.
