Ascent Trip Report

I hoped to take advantage of an unseasonably mild late-February day to mark this one off my list, but turned back because the spring runoff at Quebec Branch was too high to cross.

From Massie Gap (el 4640), the hike to Stone Mountain and Third Peak would be close to 10 miles round trip, much of it following the AT. I chose to start at the park campground (el 4360), which looks like 8-9 miles and avoids the ridges, where the wind was daunting.

I followed the green-blazed bike trail and then picked up the orange-blazed Seed Orchard Road towards Scales Road, which leads to Scales Gap (el 4600). The first mile was a breeze, but then I was thwarted by Quebec Branch, where spring runoff was over the top of the stepping stones. Not wanting to take a chance in the near-freezing water, I turned back. I returned via the Wilson Creek trail, which descends along a series of cascades before a steep climb back to the parking lot.

There's a lot of water on this mountain.
