Ascent Trip ReportAfter watching the weather report of a the worst storm of the winter rip across the states from the west bringing flash floods, tornados a lots of damage to KY, TN, AL and other states, I was told I would not be able to wake up do this training hike in the morning before returing to my business trip. Several people were killed that night including and Amish family crossing a raging river. I went to bed dissapointed. The storm raced towards Atlanta at 60 MPH.
At 5 AM I awoke to strong wings and rain and went back to bed. At 6:30 the storm had passed moving through the state faster than they had expected..a training hike was possible!
I parked in the main parking lot and crunched out the 6.2 mile round trip from parking lot to parking lot in 1 hour and 50 minutes not bad considering the vertical (over 1,800 feet) and stopping for photos and reading some history plaques. The cannons on the summits of both Kennesaw Mountains had a haunting reminder that brother faught brother during this war and this odd mountain range was key to the raging battle below.
Left parking lot at 7:23 AM returned after 6.2 miles at 9:17 AM
Temperature was 56F leaving and warmed to 63F exiting. The total vertical was 1,861 since I traversed from front to back of three peaks and thus did 6 total. The vertical includes some minor gain along the way as noted in the TRs. See TR for the other two peaks in the sequence.
I saw 5 small fawn on the way up eerily watching me as i was the first on up the mountain that morning. I passed many more deer as the day went on. I also passed about 30 people on the way back and passed everyone climbing, hiking, walking that day with nobody passing me. A good training pace indeed.
Good views in winter with trees folage gone and the cannons and civl war reminders along the way made this a surprisingly nice trip. Good job US Park service.
