Ascent Trip ReportFirst of many hundreds of ascents. The exact date is just a guess. I know it was October, though.
I climbed this peak about twice a week during the winter of 1992-1993, then in the ensuing years about two or three times a month, even in Summer (not for long). I have been up the west side (Echo Canyon) possibly 200+ times, the east side (Cholla) about a half dozen times. I honestly have no idea how many times I have climbed this peak ... 100 is too low a guess, 500 probably too high.
This is a fantastic training hike. It's 1,250 feet of gain in 1.2 miles, so it's sustained, with a rocky tread requiring more than just walking. I use the term "Camelback" as a unit of measure - roughly 1000 vertical feet in 1 mile.
I was interviewed on TV after a hike once.
I was up here when about 200 Easter Sunday congregants were huddled up at the top celebrating the holiday, including the guvnah.
I've seen people wearing flip flops, holding babies, drinking beer, wearing resort casual duds. I've been caught up here in a thunderstorm.
It's never a wilderness hike. It's always crowded. But that's part of the fun. You see superhuman types fly up the damn peak in 15 minutes (my best time up is 30 mins exactly), and others scaling rocks they shouldn't be on.
