Ascent Trip Report

Drove down day before to Abingdon and arrived to Massie Gap parking around 9 am. Hiked with my boys 9 and 14. More than half the trail had snow pack up to about 2 foot thick but with temps in upper thirties we could walk on top until trip back. 9 year had some rough moments with improper footwear and just length of hike - just afterwards he said he would do it all again (candy bar at summit helped for first mile or two after turnaround). 14y old and I hiked in shorts with hiking boots and big days packs (prepared for overnighter just in case). Prior day had 100 mph winds and before temp rise much more snow - We picked a great day to hike! Loved seeing the horses (especially on way back down as it meant the car was near). With trail conditions and length of hike, we all felt this one, not trivial but in summer with longer days the hike probably would be much easier.
