Ascent Trip ReportPublic. The road approach is ok for most vehicles, maybe some clearance and tires warranted. The worst part is the potholes on the mainline road which are rather tedious. Better once the road starts going up. You can also hike this from the N but I can't speak to that. Signage at the TH indicates 2.5 miles but my track indicated it was likely 2.5 to the lookout summit discussed below rather than the true summit which is more like three miles each way.
The trail is signed hiker only with posts at the start and one barricade a bit later to try to enforce that. The downed trees, numbering perhaps 25, also would stop motocross types currently. Trail is otherwise in good shape, but a little bit talus-y higher up. I found the trail to be pleasant as it wanders through the forest. It's been re-routed from the more direct mapped route and has a gentle grade. I did not hike the old road/trail to the Dandy Mine as I was not sure on ownership or whether it is active. Higher up, there were a decent number of snow patches remaining but all in all was fine in tennis shoes. Upon reaching the S end of the 5600' contour there is a marked sign saying this is the summit of South Chilco at 5634'. Sorta confusing. This was a former lookout site and it does feature some views and interesting rippled rocks. Continuing on, the mapped summit was a total letdown. I was expecting at least a cairn or minimal rise given the spot elevation but it was all just flat boring forest. Hmmm. Per the old LO page the rocky unmarked spot was 5634' and there was also a lookout on North Chilco at 5636'. So 5661' seems clearly higher but also clearly lamer than both. Still, nice trail and this would be a decent peak especially on a marginal weather day given the trail. The primary attraction aside from the prominence was that this peak appears on the P1500 cell map for WA. Saw one other party who had come from the N.
