Ascent Trip ReportI used Fred Lobdell's RT of 1999 which still applies toady, my purpose is to update/complement this report based on the ground conditions of today.
AREA 1 (PB's Main Area) located at the northwest corner of the County at the Washington County Line.
Because of last evening's long torrential downpour we decided to avoid dirt roads as much as possible, so we approached Area 1 from the west side by taking a long detour.
Starting in Washington County, at the road intersection of hwy 77/Elkcam Blvd ...... large "Sunny Hill" sign, Dollar General store across the road. This intersection is located 12 miles north of hwy 20 or 12 miles south of I10 exit 120. Elkcam Blvd is the entrance to a huge development started 30 years ago. It is full of paved roads with no houses. Someone must have lost a few bucks.
We drove east on the paved Elkcam Blvd (pavement ends the last few miles, pass Orange Hill Road on the left) for 7.7 miles to a cross-road signed Fox Hunt Road, straight ahead is a north-south Power Line which is the County Line. We parked here, you are still in Washington County.
Fred puts the Bay County corner 150 feet south under the Power Line, and the Bay County Highpoint further south ..... I found a weird marker on the ground at about 150 feet directly under the Power Line, a roughly made 6 foot diameter marker (black asphalt shingle with a white cross also from asphalt shingles) nailed to the ground. Could this be the Bay County corner? My coordinates here were 30.56723, 85.48549.
There is a "Posted" fence line 15 yards east and parallel to the Power Line. The PB coordinates puts the highpoint in Washington County, 70 yards south of the parked car and 25 yards west of the Power Line in the woods.
From the Parked car I turned right (south) on Fox Hunt Road (which is 10 yards west and parallel to the Power Line) and walked south to a height-of-land at about 200 yards at a pair of Power Line Poles, a wood track heads east here and is gated at the fence line. This appears to be the highground. I chose my spot to the left (north) of the gate, right at the fence 30.56598, 85.48534.
We returned to 77 and drove south to 20, east to 231 then north to the other 2 Areas at the Calhoun County line.
AREA 2 AND 3
We drove north on 231 to Lesne Road on the right ...... this road is 8.5 miles north of 20 or about 1 mile south of the Jackson/Bay County line.
We turned right (east) and traveled the dirt road .3 miles to a cross road with 2 mailboxes on the left #13841 and #13843. We turned left and drove uphill to the second house #13843 on the left. On the right is a fence line paralleling the road , on the other side of the fence line is the County Line right-of-way, just ahead is an obvious west-east ridge that runs into Calhoun County.
The owner, Bob Scroggins, was outside, he was aware and pleased that this was the highground of the area and welcomes highpointers.. He built here last year on 4 acres of land, moving from Maryland.
AREA 3 ..... the highpoint is on the ridge at .18 miles from Lesne Road, outside his fence line at a small tree, my GPS read 30.55478,85.38428. Good views to the north.
AREA 2 ..... located 150 yards southwest of Area 3 behind house #13841, the obvious highground is at 30.55396, 85.38537. This area appears to be flattened and I believe it is much lower than Area 3. It should be removed as a candidate.
