Ascent Trip ReportThe Blue Summit trail from Manchester is an unremitting grind. Its average grade is 19%, well beyond what any trail engineer would consider sustainable. The roadbed section has survived okay, but lots of erosion is evident in the trail's upper part. If it were realigned down to a 12% average grade- the maximum allowable in the redesign of most federal trails- the trail would be 60% longer at 4.4 miles instead of 2.7. But then it wouldn't be such a good workout... |
