Ascent Trip Report

I was here as part of a multi-day journey visiting state and county highpoints. However, I spent almost no time in New Jersey, just long enough to tag the top.

From eastern Pennsylvania, I followed two-lane highways north toward Port Jervis. The day was growing old, it was drizzly, and there was traffic. Two guys were cutting traffic by driving the right shoulder. I was in no mood, so I flipped them the bird. This got their attention.

We then played a few minutes of cat and mouse. They cut me off, then I passed them, then they passed me. I wasn't sure how this would end, but after about five minutes, they pulled into a parking lot and that was the end of that.

I then followed Route PA-209 from Bushkill. This was also clogged with people and their stupid RVs. Getting to Port Jervis was turning out to be an epic. Finally, I was there. From Port Jervis, I entered New Jersey on Route NJ-23 for about 4 miles to the High Point State Park.

New Jersey should be commended for creating such a nice park for its highpoint. However, today the weather was rainy and foggy, and the 220-foot monument on its summit was closed for repairs. The upside was that I didn't have to pay any entry fee. I drove up to the top, parked in the dense fog, walked 200 feet to the "summit", and clambered up to the rocky top, outside of the construction fencing.

It was just me. I had the whole park to myself. But I didn't stay long as the sun was nearly setting, it was cold and I was hungry. I returned to Port Jervis for a meal at the Dairy Queen, then re-entered Pennsylvania via Interstate-84 to Scranton, down the Turnpike to Philadelphia, where I stayed the night in Essington, a suburb of Philadelphia. This set me up for the Delaware highpoint the next day.
