Ascent Trip ReportI approached Clingmans Dome from the North Carolina side, starting today from the city of Waynesville. The towns abutting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are unbelievably crowded, with every square foot taken up by signs, souvenir shops, restaurants and eight hundred other things. Thankfully, once past the boundary, the ugliness ends and the natural beauty of the mountains resumes.
I drove slowly westward toward the main range ahead. The views were lovely. The slow drive was not by design, as a lot of RVs hogged the road, going 10 miles per hour on the uphill grades.
From the main route, I followed another road south six miles to a parking area below Clingmans Dome. Up here, the fog was thick, obscuring all views. I walked a paved footpath to the top, tagged the top, milled around for a brief while, then returned to my vehicle.
My entire "Tennessee Highpoint" excursion and hike was entirely within North Carolina, other than the moment I tagged the presumed top, which momentarily meant I was "in" Tennessee. With the fog, this was not a memorable experience. I'll come back when I am older, then I can be the slowpoke in an R.V.
