Ascent Trip ReportI had just hiked the highpoint of nearby Fayette County, getting caught in a downpour on the walk out. I could drive this peak to nearly the top. Given I was soaked, a drive-up was welcome.
From the town of Pavia on route PS-869, I drove four miles north to PA-4035, signed as Forest Road and the entrance to Blue Knob State Park. The drive to the top was fast and eventless. I parked and clambered up a couple hills near the tops of some ski-lifts. Some guys were doing general maintenance work, but they paid me no mind. I kept my visit short, happy to have another success, albeit a very easy one.
Alas, I would have my first "failure" not far up the road. I wanted to hike Schaeffer Head, the highpoint of Blair County. However, the rain was falling heavily, and I was looking at a bush-whack the whole way up. I didn't want to get any more wet, so I passed right by, and continued my journey. The fog in places was extremely thick, with perhaps 100 feet of visibility. I carefully made my way to Altoona.
