Ascent Trip ReportTrail head is at Hogpen Gap. There is a Hogpen Gap sign but trees block the view. Below it is a more conspicuous Union/White County line sign. Signs are on the south side of the Russell Hwy (348). On the north side is a large parking lot and a kiosk. Appalachian Trail crosses the highway just below the eastern end of the
Look for a short wooden bridge on the south/sign side of the highway. Proceed on the AT switchbacking uphill. After a couple minutes arrive at the Whitley Gap Trail Junction. Go in the direction of the Whitley Gap Shelter sign. 1.2 miles later arrive at the shelter after enjoying fine views along the Wildcat Mtn ridge.
From the shelter a less worn trail continues across the saddle with Adams Bald. This trail heads left to skirt around the north and east facing slopes to reach a saddle between Adams and a subpeak. At this saddle I headed up to the Adams summit and then down to the saddle with Rocky Mountain. No trail, but travel was uneventful. For the ascent up Rocky I followed yellow metal Georgia Dept of Natural Resources signs. No formal trail, but travel was again uneventful until the very last stretch when the slope and the brush increased. Limited views on top.
On the way back to the car I sloped and slipped around the south and west sides of Adams. Should have just retraced my steps back the other way.
