Ascent Trip Report

Here's a quote from the HPS site regarding Middle Peak. It may have been added just recently. I don't recall seeing this update before I set out.

"While the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park recovers from the devastating fire of 2003, cross-country hiking has been discouraged. Check with a ranger before proceeding all the way to Middle's summit. If they won't give permission to do the final cross-country bit of the climb, it is sufficient to go to the highest point of the road/trail that circles the summit area."

I got to about 50-60 vertical ft. from the summit and stood on a rock high enough to see the last bit of travel to the summit, perhaps 60 yards away. My shirt was ripped and my forearms were bleeding. Looking ahead, the brush ahead was even denser than what it took to reach this point. It was utter insanity to travel any further.

- I never checked with a ranger beforehand. This update was unknown to me at the time of my visit.

- I'll count this peak as a successful climb for now, per the recent HPS update, and will gladly go back and complete the last short segment to the summit when it's feasible. Until then, this peak will be known as Middle Finger Peak.

If you desire to reach the actual summit I would suggest checking back periodically on this site in hopes that someone has cleared a path, or, bring a handful of others and do it yourself...if that's even allowed per current state park guidelines.
