Ascent Trip ReportParked at Tate Branch Campground. Followed Google Map directions which took me to Upper Hightower Rd which I followed to Charlies Creek Rd where my Subaru spun all 4 wheels trying to ascend a gouge of red clay in a steep incline. Backed out and turned around and drove to Persimmon Rd and then Tallulah River Rd.
Read about some who started on the wrong side of Tate Branch (south side) so we walked on the road, over the bridge and to the first place where the terrain allowed ascent and went off trail to the top of a small drainage where we picked up a woods road.
Followed the woods road which, in various forms of deterioration, was continuous to the saddle above the Tate Branch drainage where we found the end of the closed 4WD FS Rd. Here we began following a herd path with very occasional pink ribbons. We were able to follow the path the whole way but could see that if the low brush were in leaf it might be easy to lose. There were a few spots where the canes scratched but not as bad as others (Slaughter, Brier Creek Bald).
Passed over Steeltrap Knob and hardly any drop before a somewhat steep ascent to Dicks Knob. The peak was obvious but non-descript. Nowhere to sit comfortable so we descended to the saddle to have lunch. Total was 7.2 miles and over 2700 feet gross ascent. Weather was a mix of sun and clouds but bright enough all day for photos.
