Ascent Trip Report

Spending a few days in Flagstaff, AZ in preparation for Nathaniel's deployment. Lots of hiking and exploring one of our favorite towns. As Humphrey Peak was still covered in snow - Elden was our close second. Overlooking the town, we had seen the peak from several different vantage points - but weren't sure about the route up. Parked at the ranger station and bought a map - clearly marked trail and up we went. The most difficult part about this hike was not the elevation gain.... but the actual starting elevation. 7800 feet or so.... And for us San Diegans, that is HIGH and more than what we're used to. We took the most direct route up - approximately 3 miles. There were a few points where we had to cross bits of snow and patches of slippery mud - but overall the trail was in great condition. Above 8700 feet or so (final 500 ffeet to the summit), everything was covered in snow - thigh deep in places. Luckily, there were footprints of people who had bagged the peak before us, so we carefully stepped into them. Slow going at times - but the vews in the summit were awesome. Windy day - but we had a quick llunch and chocolate in the shadow of Humphrey Peak. Found the USGS markers near the weather station and on the Flagstaff side of the antenae. Views of the desert and what we though was part of the Grand Canyon coudl be seen. BEAUTIFUL. Hike down was a breath of fresh air. Awesome hike! On the way down, we tacked an extra 1.5 miles by taking The Fat Man's Loop Trail (not kidding on the name)
