Ascent Trip ReportTook a drive after work to the Catskills for a little trek.
Started at the Peekamoose trail head at 2:25 pm with full crampons. At 2.5 miles I started to sink into soft spots so switched to snowshoes for better traction and to not hurt the trail. Arrived at the summit at 4:55pm. Wooded summit but there is a nice view to the east very close to the summit boulder.
Departed summit at 5:30pm and arrived back to parking lot at 7:10. Kept snowshoes on until the last 3/4 miles. At this time micros or full crampons are needed for traction and your safety. Snowshoes are recommended to prevent trail damage. However, you can make it without snowshoes. But you'll be walking in the snowshoe tracks so that you don't sink in.
The snow is 4-6' deep in spots within a mile of the summit. This makes for an annoying bushwhack in those areas. The trail is so high you are walking in the tree branches in spots. Some trail markers are only 2' above the snow. You look down at a lot of trail markers near the summit.
3 other hikers came down with in the first 1.5 miles. The rest of the out and back was completely alone. It was nice. Was hoping to come down in the moonlight but clouds rolled in and it was dark as dark.
