Ascent Trip Report

From the Amargosa Valley I hiked across the open desert to the unnamed canyon shown. This canyon has two vertical dryfalls, one of which could be over 100 ft tall. Both can be bypassed to the west. As one leaves the canyon the plateau with the old railroad grade to the Inyo Mine is reached. The loop shown was hiked in the clockwise direction, and the ascent route from the plateau begins with a section along a wash leading to a saddle on the main ridge NNE of the peak. I won't recommend this route - it was steep and involved scrambling around knife-edge sections of the ridge the entire way between the saddle and Schwaub Peak.

My route down initially followed the same ridge I ascended on, that is the NE ridge coming down from Schwaub Peak. I followed it to a point below Pt 6395, from where I turned NW and followed that ridge back down to the plateau, as shown. This turned out to be easier than the ascent route.

Next time, to avoid the scrambling along the NE ridge, I might try the ridge stretching west from the peak instead - it looks easier.
