Ascent Trip Report

HPS Peak # 29. I intended to follow HPS Route 2 but since it was a little crowded I tried to opt for trails I thought would be less popular, with success. Total distance was about 17 miles, with 4000' of elevation gain.

I hiked up from Cobb Estate via Sam Merrill trail, Echo Mountain Trail, Mt. Lowe Road, and the East Mt. Lowe Trail. Everything above 4800' was on snowshoes. The views from the summit were excellent on a clear day, with snowy mountains in most directions and the ocean and downtown LA to the southwest.

I descended via the saddle between Markham and Lowe, then took the trail down to the fire road below San Gabriel Peak. I descended back to Mt. Lowe Campground on the fire road, removing the snowshoes at around 4600' because the trail was mostly in the sun and things were melting fast. I finished the descent on the Sam Merrill trail, which was just as pretty as I remembered. Overall a great day.
