With the new year coming on Saturday, that meant work closed on Friday for the holiday. I took advantage of this opening to gather some nearby Michigan counties. I had scoped them out long ago, and Friday became the right time to check out these three adjacent, one-contour counties. I set off to complete the three counties of St. Joseph, Cass, and Berrien and return in time for some late night festivities. I followed my GPS and Mike Schwartz trip reports to each county without difficulty.

My first stop was St. Joseph County, MI. I passed through Three Rivers, MI and approached the HP from the east along Mt. Zion Road. Passing over the crest near the HP, I parked off the road just beyond the crest. It was a moist day; temperatures were unseasonably warm in the 50’s, and the air was thick in near-fog conditions brought on by the recently melted snow. It was drizzling off and on throughout the day.

I poked through the trees lining the road and came to an open field full of tall grasses. The area was a favorite of deer as evidenced by the numerous scat piles that were present. It was obvious what direction to take to the HP as the ground rose quickly and consistently all the way. I quickly arrived at the HP area, and the first thing I noticed was a white rectangular sign. The sign said “SURVEY MARKER – Please Do Not Disturb Nearby Survey Marker”. I wandered around the high ground but did not find the BM.

The sign was found on a fence-line that continued in an east-west direction. The HP to me appeared to be at another spot along the fence, near a tall oak tree. I left the HP area after wandering around a bit. On my way back to the car, I spotted the first of four deer to be seen on the day’s adventure. I drove away and was surprised to find how near I was to adjacent Cass County. Trip statistics: Time = 20min up and back; Distance = 0.50mi for the round trip; Elevation gain = 58ft total gain.
