Ascent Trip ReportI didn't originally intend to bag this peak today, but I decided to as I noticed the Tory's Den trail would take me so close to it. After heading up from Tory's Falls (which was flowing very well today), I split off of the Reuben Mountain trail. This is an easy trail with only a couple small ascents - The hardest part is avoiding the gigantic piles of horse shit that litter the trail.
Looking at my topo map, I wanted to simply break off the trail and 'whack straight up the north side of the mountain to the peak, but a ridiculous amount of shrubbery indicated such route would be fought with misery. Having cell phone reception, I consulted the two previous trip reports and followed their advice. I left the path further NE on the trail and 'whacked up to the ridgeline, then turned SW and followed it to the high point. As the others said, the actual HP is not where the old topo map says, but further SW down the ridgeline. It requires a very minor amount of scrambling through some briars to reach. Directly below the HP are spectacular secret views of the Piedmont below, along with a very clear view of the Winston-Salem skyline. There's also an equally spectacular view back towards Cook's Wall from the summit itself. These views were the highlight of my whole day!
