Ascent Trip ReportWarm day (high seventies) with nobody on trail/en route. First time going off-piste in some time. I found this peak more challenging than I expected mostly because of the steep open-country aspect which was cacti-ridden coupled with loose rock and soil. I left the trail head at 0734 hr. and headed up the PCT for the first two miles. At the ravine where most people break from the PCT I did the same and headed uphill trying to contour and side step with some difficulty. When I got to the base of the Grapevine summit block I went straight up. The brush and cacti weren't as bad atop the summit ridge. I reached two false summits before I finally gained a view of the true summit which I reached at 0930 hr. Signed the register and found the two benchmarks then headed back down at 0941 hr. Back at car at 1120 hr. having taken at least three off-trail spills and pulling out a half inch cactus (agave?) needle from my shin. Pre-hydrated with 500 ml of water at trail head and drank another 500 ml upon return.
Grapevine forms an impressive bulk from the approach along Hwy 78 despite being dwarfed by nearby Granite and Whale Peaks (2021-01-17). Photo by Joseph Hirniak.
