Ascent Trip ReportI had first attempted this peak on 11/15/2020 heading up the Art Loeb Trail from the Daniel Boone Scout Camp. I took what I thought would be an easy bushwhack up from the east side, which quickly devolved into an uncomfortable slam through thick shrubbery. Eventually I gave up and turned back to the trail - This descent through ungodly thick bushes turned out to be the most miserable 20 minutes I've ever spent in Southern Appalachia, topping even my worst App State hangovers.
However, on this hike today, I spotted open woods directly north of Flower Gap and decided to make another attempt. The woods were open at first but the thick brush quickly reappeared. Determined, I slugged through it and made it to what I am certain was the high point. Walked around through the brush to make sure I had got it and I quickly discovered I had stopped no more than twenty feet short of the high point on my last attempt.
Satisfied with my successful bag, I headed back down to the Art Loeb Trail and returned to the Shining Creek Trailhead via the namesake trail. By the time I made it back to the car, I had spent an entire day in Shining Rock Wilderness without seeing a SINGLE other person!! |
