Ascent Trip ReportPlanned to get an early start such that I could finish and meet up with the Sunday hiking group a few miles away. Drive took just over 90 minutes. Parked in the large area just off S2. Started hiking about 0720. I stayed down until I crossed the very large (deep) wash; it is obvious. I took a middle ridge. Other tracks have been right and left ridge. part of the reason was to retrieve six very large mylar balloons entangled in an Ocotillo. Took awhile to un-entangle. (The route was cholla free. I stayed just at the edge of larger volcanic rocks. Who knew cholla grew on the moon?? ;) Once towards the top you can see the broad summit plateau...actual high point is far side. The volcanic rocks are interesting...how did they get so smooth (as water and wind had to work eons). Found the register can/jar on the west side of a rock cairn. Signed; Register was from 1982. I took the same (mostly) route back. Again slight detours for some more mylar balloons. I got back to the car at 0920. Total distance was 3.04 miles; total time was 1hr 55 minutes (included all stops - photos, mylars, summit).
I drove two miles north on S2 to Jojoba wash. I was only a few minutes behind the Sunday hiking group. I caught them at the first section marker within the first mile. Proceeded in a large loop to two more section markers and a point peak before returning to the vehicles. The group was celebrating Carols' 700th hike and Neal's 3rd 100th hike. The loop was an additional 4.5 miles and 515' gain/loss. |
