Ascent Trip Report On the last day of the year, I did my second hike since foot surgery. Again, I wanted to take it easy and not push it, so I picked some easy bumps I’ve done before. They are all in or around Red Rock Canyon in NV, one of my favorite hiking spot.
The first, Moenkopi Hill, is a nice easy warm-up hike. The trail head starts at the picnic table next to the visitor center. Just follow the sign trail for a loop hike.
Next, was Horse Peak. It starts at the Gene’s TH on Calico Basin road. Follow the trail about 100’ where a smaller trail cuts off to the right. Follow this one about a quarter of a mile to a tee junction. Make a sharp right and follow this trail to a use trail to leads up to the saddle before Horse then on to the summit.
Next was Fire Station Hill. From 159, turn right on the road to the BLM fire station (Moenkipi Rd) about 0.8 miles and park. The fence line makes a sharp right. Walk about 100 yards to a pass through, then follow fence line to a point where an old road cuts to the right. There was a rock carin right after starting on the road. Follow this road to another road, turn left and follow this road. It eventually becomes a trail that leads to the summit. Just before the summit, there was a 55 gal drum someone had put up there. Not sure why.
Last was Visitor Center Overlook. It was a short hike starting at Cowboy Trail Riders. There was no registers or benchmarks on any of these bumps.
