Ascent Trip Report

Winter access to the peak can be achieved by driving the D120a from Anglefort to the village of Bezonne. The direct road from Culoz (D120) is not ploughed when there is snow and was closed by a barrier at the upper end at the time of my visit. I expected to start from there but amazingly the road was ploughed and drivable all the way up to about 1320m where it provides access to a chalet. I started from there with my snowshoes across some very hard snow intending to take the ridgeline all the way along. However, the sub-peak of Pierre Amion was a scramble from the south and had no obivous way off to the north, necessitating a small detour. Following that the ridge was simple and I soon passed under the pylons to reach the summit. Simultaneously the morning mist cleared to leave a stunning panorama of the French Alps, Mont Blanc being particularly prominent. Having an unexpectedly quick ascent gave me the opportunity to add another couple of peaks to the day's schedule so I headed off to the Mollard de Don.
