Ascent Trip ReportFrom Orleans at the north end of the Klamath River bridge on CA 96, enter Red Cap Rd (FSR 10N01). After 6.4 miles go right on FSR 10N02, descend to cross Red Cap Creek, then climb back up to meet FSR 10N05. Turn right at this junction, where a sign shows "Shelton Butte--8 miles", then turn right on FSR 10N09 for the final 4.1 miles to Shelton Butte. Of the 16.0 miles from CA 96 to Shelton Butte, about 9.5 miles is on good dirt road, the rest on narrow paved road. I cannot recommend a visit to this former L.O. site. Most of the drive is through forest with no views and, even more importantly, the summit area is covered in foliage, affording no views at all. Only a small communications box and a dilapidated outhouse remain.
