Ascent Trip ReportGPS address is Barrett Mountain VOR, Wittenberg NC.
Drive to the end of Barrett Mountain Road and park where the road ends (el. 1810). A gated driveway leads to the top of the hill. This gate is not posted and can be walked around. You could actually drive around the gate, but a true Martinization is not possible, so get out and walk the last tenth of a mile to a locked gate that guards the VOR/DME station on the summit. The ground inside the summit fence is several feet higher than the gate.
In my quest for drivable summits, I've found several VOR stations, which are part of a post-WW2 aviation navigation system. Many are obsolete, but the Barrett Mountain facility is listed as part of the NextGen system. This site is VOR/DME, which stands for VHF Omnidirectional Range (VOR) with Distance Measuring Equipment. Similar beacons are found on Snowbird Mtn TN/NC, Hinch Mtn TN, and Sugarloaf Mtn NC.
A couple of miles northwest of the VOR station is Bald Knob (el. 1913, prom 643), the 10th highest peak in Alexander County). I was in a hurry today so I will have to come back for that one. Satellite photos show a house on top. You can approach via paved Barrett Ridge Lane, gravel Boyd Fox Drive, and a driveway signed Woods Walk.
