Ascent Trip Report

Climbed with Craggy Dome

In my quest to complete the SB6K list, I need to complete the 10 peaks in the Black Mountains and then Craggy Dome. When looking at the map for the Craggy Dome, I realized it was not too far from the southernmost 6000 ft. peaks of the Black Mountain range and decided to both Blackstone Knob and Craggy Dome. I parked my truck at Blackstone Gap (Walker Knob Overlook) on Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) and decided to tackle Blackstone Knob first. I hike east on the Mountain to Sea Trail (MST) to summit of Blackstone Knob (~1.5 Miles). It started out steep from the parking lot and then leveled out once on the ridge line. Right near the summit, it did begin to climb again. Once near a high point, I was able to find a pile of rocks, which I called the summit. From there, I headed west on the MST back through Blackstone Gap. The trail went up and down a lot more over some smaller peaks than I had originally expected. Once at Graybeard Overlook, I took the spur trail to summit of Craggy Dome. Maybe I was tired, but that was a really steep trail to the summit of Craggy Dome. Once there, there was a rock to stand on for a nice 360-degree view and a great vie of Blackstone Knob that I had done earlier. From there, I headed down to the MST and back to my truck. I must have been really tired as I felt ever small rolling hill on the way back.
