Ascent of Dicks Knob on 2020-11-08
|Date:||Sunday, November 8, 2020|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||4600 ft / 1402 m|
Ascent Trip ReportDriving: I went west across patterson Gap road to persimmon rd before turning north on Coleman River Rd. It is about 5 miles from the turn onto Coleman River Rd to the trailhead. Stay north and keep left at the sign for Forest Road 54. A little over 2 miles in, you will come to a T-intersection. Stay left. The road becomes much rougher past the T and is probably impassible for passenger vehicles. The trailhead is at the gate for FR 198 (34.95100, -83, 53728). 4WD mandatory.
Hiking: From the gate, just follow FR 198 north. At about the 2 mile mark, FR 198A cuts off to the south and climbs to the summit of Chestnut Mountain. This is worth the short sidetrip on your way down. FR198 ends at the base of Steeltrap Knob (34.97659, -83.52139). There, a faint social trail cuts straight up the slope over Steeltrap and up to the summit of Dicks Knob. This would be miserable in the summer but was decent in the fall. Brambles abound and there were occasional glimpses through the trees toward Carter Gap and Ridgepole Mountain. This was not as challenging as I had feared.
Chestnut Mountain has the best views. and is only an extra 5 minutes.
