Ascent Trip ReportWe started our hike from Jacks Gap on Hwy 180, and took Jacks Knob trail to the AT. Our intention was to make the ascent of Horsetrough along the spur from Cold Springs Gap, but when we got to the gap, the undergrowth looked thicker than expected, so we opted to continue on the AT and look for an easier way to summit. The path we chose was still fairly difficult with a lot of undergrowth, mostly shrubs/trees from knee high to waist high. The summit of Horsetrough had a lot of blackberry bushes.
We returned to the AT using roughly the same path as the ascent and then took to AT to Red Clay Gap for our ascent of Spaniards Knob. There were numerous mountain laurels as we started up the spur, but it was easy to pick our way through them. We crossed over a small knob an then began the ascent of Spaniards Knob. The undergrowth was not as rough as Horsetrough, and we just worked our way to the summit.
The trip was about 10.5 miles according to my phone app and took about 5 1/2 hours of hiking time. |
