Ascent Trip ReportI think it's possible to drive partway up this from the NW (Alhaurin el Grande) side but when I was there in July a couple of years ago there was a sign saying vehicles were prohibited during the hunting season. Nov also seems to be the hunting season, so I used the route described by Lee Newton, from the SE.
I initially managed to drive past the trailhead but it's a pretty obvious parking area on the A-387 at the N edge of Mijas village. N36 35 47.5 W4 38 23.2, GPSr, elev 473m. After an early morning flight into Malaga I started hiking at 11:50. The yellow trail leads up to the Ermita, then the blue trail towards the SE ridge. A wide track is crossed (turn R then immediately L), then at a signpost (N36 36 28.8 W4 38 53.0, 963m) turn sharply L on the green trail. This crosses a ridge, descends c. 30m, bends N then W across steep slopes then zig-zags steeply up to the summit ridge (small comms installation). After a slight descent, a steep short loose sandy path leads up to the summit masts and (standard cylindrical) trig pillar. One of the masts was being worked on but there is no difficulty reaching the summit. N36 36 47.9 W4 39 33.6 (GPSr), 1145m.
There is a WNW summit, shown as 1149m (www.ign.es/iberpix/visoriberpix/visorign.html), only 1m lower than the trig. Visually it also appeared lower so I resisted the temptation to make the detour. The view is excellent, across the coastal plane to the Med, NW to Torrecilla and W to Sierra de Marbella. I also hoped to climb Marbella this afternoon so headed back down. I met several hikers on the trail - all of them fellow Englishmen! Timings were 1h15 up, 0h55 down, moving fairly quickly in moderately warm conditions. A very nice hike.
NOTE: I took a wrong turn on the last part of the descent, hence the saved GPS track is WRONG in the lower part. |
